Courtroom #325, in the NY City Civil Court building was standing room only last night, when more than two hundred people huddled together to watch Shahabuddeen Ally be sworn in as the first Muslim male Civil Court Judge in New York City.

“Sha” Ally, as he is known to his friends, is an accomplished attorney who has an incredible personal story about immigrating from Guyana at a young age with his six other siblings. His success is nothing short the American dream. Not only is he the first Muslim male elected to the bench in New York City, he is also the first Indian Caribbean judge in New York State.

“I am the immigrate success story!” He said proudly during his closing remarks after being sworn in by his wife, The Honorable Alicea Elloras-Ally.

Despite cold rainy weather conditions, many of New York City’s upper Manhattan power players were downtown speaking eloquently and movingly about their friend and colleague.

NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, NY State Assembly member Carmen De La Rosa, City Council members Mark Levine and Ydanis Rodriguez shared stories of his tireless service as a community leader.  They recounted milestones of his notable law career. One after one, politicians, friends and family spoke proudly of him as a loving family man and legal trailblazer!

By proclamation, Gale Brewer even deemed the day, December 20, 2018, officially “Shahabuddeen ‘Shah’ Ally appreciation day” in Manhattan.

This historical induction was touching for many reason.  Not only was, Shahabuddeen Ally sworn in by his wife, but his son Ryan stood proudly by his side.

The Honorable Shahabuddeen Ally reflected on the power of his success as a message of hope, “Being elected as a judge is an end to a very rewarding and rigorous process but what’s important for me to let everyone know is that this process is available to everyone.“

In a letter of congratulations to Judge Ally, Mayor Bill de Blasio wrote, “I know that you will further strengthen our dynamic legal community that is so vital to upholding our core values of equality and justice.”

Judge Ally has hosted many "Represent NYC" here at MNN and we congratulate him and extend our best wishes!
